The Root of Inner Conflict

From Don Miguel Ruiz’s Little Book of Wisdom by Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.

The real conflict inside us is the conflict between truth and lies. If we believe in the truth, our mind is calm, and if we believe in lies, we are in turmoil. Anytime you feel jealousy, anger, resentment, or any other negative emotion, then you can be certain you are believing a lie. Our level of internal turmoil depends on how deep the lie goes. The larger the lie, the more we suffer.

The irony is that, despite our suffering, we often become fanatics as we try to defend the lie. We want to believe it so badly. We make it so important that despite the internal conflict it creates in our minds we just cannot let it go.

The biggest addiction that humans have is an addiction to suffering. As we grow up we see everyone around us suffering—our parents are suffering, our siblings are suffering, everyone around us at school is suffering—and we learn to suffer just like them. We have the best teachers all around us, and practice makes the master. It is from all of our teachers that the main character of our story learned exactly how to suffer, how to judge, how to manipulate, how to punish, and more. Until we wake up, we are not happy if we don’t suffer regularly. If you are suffering, remember to enjoy your suffering, as you are the one who created it.

There is only truth in the present moment. What is true right now is not what is true one minute from now, an hour after that, the next day, and the day after that, and what is true is always good, for what is true for you right now is that you are alive! Wake up and rejoice in truth that you are a living, breathing, spiritual being having a human experience here on earth. OWL around you is beauty. OWL around you is suffering.
