Quantum Flirts
As described by Arnold Mindell, a quantum flirt is “a short-lived, transient, perpetual signal which can be used to provide us with insight.” A flirt from the universe can come in any form—we can see them, hear them, feel, smell or taste them. These quantum flirts with the universe happen throughout our daily lives, like a gentle nudge meant to catch our attention, so that we can actually observe and notice whatever meaning that may hold for us. If this all sounds a bit too ‘woo woo’ for you, stick around, even the most left-brained leaders benefit from ‘flirts’ from the universe. It’s science. Quantum physics to be exact.
OWL admit, I’m a total fan of flirting with the universe, so when Dan and I let God (the universe) know we were ready to move to a new state, in addition to researching cities and making a list of our “must haves,” I also made sure to create plenty of room for Quantum Flirting to come our way as we travelled across the country, exploring potential cities to call home. Of all the moments to pause and notice, only one city showered me with Quantum Flirts that said, “This, this is where you belong.” That’s a bold statement coming from someone whoo didn’t even check out the taco scene.
The key to creating opportunities for “showering” yourself in Quantum Flirts is to not have too much of a plan, if any, and be open to changing the plan at anytime, based on a whim, a particular feeling, or perhaps even an untimely traffic light that causes you to veer off course and pull into a strip mall with the big sign that says, “wine.” What can I say, sometimes the universe flirts with my gut brain, whoo happens to be a connoisseur of wine, and of course my head brain, whoo lives for happy hour deals and was concerned the doggie in the backseat might also need a refreshing drink.
This is the exact scenario that led me to experience my second major Quantum Flirt of the day. Although I didn’t have too much of a plan, I definitely had an intention to explore and ‘feel’ out the area. And once my eye caught sight of the ‘wine’ and ‘happy hour’ sign, I accepted the ‘signal’ from the universe and changed course, literally, I steered my car in the opposite direction than I had originally intended, and as a result, I met an awesome woman, and yadda yadda yadda, we’ve exchanged numbers and she offered to help me with my job search at the university (she’s a professor). And yes, I totally yadda yadda’d over the best part!
There were so many serendipitous synchronicities throughout our conversation, beginning with her phone being dead (if you’ve met me, you know my phone is always dying, about to die or dead), as well as her plan to move to Nashville (where my childhood bestie lives), and her profession in social work (my dad was a social worker). The Quantum Flirt that gave her pause and the intention to shift direction was my dapper doggie Jameson. What can I say, he’s a bit of a show stopper and clearly takes after his momma!
Quantum flirts like this continued throughout our trip across Tennessee in the form of a Chicago Cubs t-shirt that led to a conversation with a lovely couple whoo moved there 6 years ago and loves it, an invitation to join a women and her husband from Hoboken (where we lived) for wine and conversation that led to future plans for holding a ‘cook off’ between our partners, and even meeting THREE (this is a significant number for me) OWLS at the nature center that just happened to be visiting that weekend! OWLS guys, OWLS! Hoot Hoot! (See photo below for proof).
It was if the universe conspired to send me OWL of my favorite things, in human and non-human form, in an effort to welcome me to my new home. As I sit her reflecting on that trip, including the job interview that happened out of the blue exactly 1 hour after submitting my resume (spoiler alert, no job was offered and I didn’t want it anyway), I can’t help but be in awe of all the opportunities these quantum flirts have led to, and sit in wonder at all the teeny hints of future possibilities and what may come of them.
Each one of these Quantum Flirts from the universe led to a shift in my conscious decision making, and it has made all the difference in my life. Like a man (or woman) whoo meets two paths in the woods, the path less travelled is ‘flirting’ with you, inviting you to make your mark. What Quantum Flirts have you experienced recently?
