Rewrite Your Story with Katie (that’s me!)

In 2012, I founded QTown Fitness, (doing business as QTown CrossFit), while simultaneously teaching high school history full-time. It was an exciting adventure full of possibilities, and it was a truly humbling experience that brought me to knees, both literally (at church) and figuratively, as I began struggling with anxious thoughts, made up scenarios in my head and how I would respond, and waves of emotional overwhelm that led to self-doubt, and at times, self-hate. If there was ever a time for a Rewrite to my story, this was going to be it. (Insert the universe here)

At what felt like just the right moment in my life, I was approached by a member to participate in her life coaching certification program as her very first client. Together, we set some goals and got to work on rewriting my story to be more aligned with my values and purpose. At least I thought these were my values, but looking back, it is clear that Rewrite of my story looked an awful lot like how my coach thought I should rewrite my story…especially when she held up a photo I posted to instagram, looked me sincerely in the eyes and said, “This isn’t the real Katie.”

The photo in question was a coffee mug that said, “Fuck yeah, Caffeine.” I had “stolen it” as a challenge from a CrossFit Games booth, Afrobrutality, and in return @afrobrutality would send me a free t-shirt. If you’ve met me, you know that is soooo the real Katie, whoo is funny, fun, and not a afraid to drop and F-bomb if the moment calls for it. And since I was getting up at 4:30am every, single, day…well I stand by that Fuck yeah, Caffeine statement. At least I do today, but in that moment, I trusted this woman’s wisdom and quickly deleted the photo. And I never did follow up to get my free t-shirt.

My Real Rewrite, the one that was definitely not that woman, would include a divorce, sale of a business, and a cross-country move to NYC. It also included that woman screaming at me outside of our favorite breakfast place, which looking back now makes total sense given I’m a 5/1 profile and the projection field around me is very real. But I digress. As I drove off into the sunset that day, I knew my next career calling would be a kick-ass coach, but first, I had to finish rewriting my own story, before I could help others step into their own process. (Insert God, the universe, setting things up for me here).

In January of 2020 the timing was right, i.e. I remembered that coaching others is my gift, and I was ready to take that leap of faith and dive head first into coaching certifications, leadership development, and OWL the learning opportunities that came my way on this leadership quest to Rewriting My Career as a nonprofit leader to your Witty and Wise Strategic Partner and Coach. You can trust that I will hold you as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole—you are not a problem to solve. More importantly, the Rewrite Your Story framework is designed so you develop the ability to trust yourself and never doubt yourself again. As Warren Bennis Says, “Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself.” And as Katie Eades (that’s me!) says,

“Nobody knows you better than you, so why look outside yourself for the answer?”

So what does it mean to Rewrite Your Story?

  • You increase your level of consciousness, i.e., self-awareness, and get out of your own way, rather than micromanaging and second-guessing yourself.

  • You examine your Reactive Mind—its values, triggers, behaviors, and patterns—and stop taking things personally—you know the enemy is not out there, but within you alone.

  • You develop your own spiritual practices, such as mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative prayer, and begin to identify not with the body-mind, but with “the soul.”

  • You lead from a place of self-acceptance and self-authority—you’re not afraid of disappointing others, risking failure, or contradicting the norms that we assume make us worthwhile, successful, and valuable.

  • You see your story as a creative, self-authoring opportunity to be lived each day, including the shadow parts of yourself that you’ve previously ignored or left behind.

  • You lean in to your under-developed strengths, recognizing that the dysfunction in the larger system is also in you.

  • When breakdowns in communication, problems, or failures occur, you do not blame others or yourself. Instead, you see opportunities to develop yourself and others, holding both as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole.

  • As a leader you can support, challenge, and confront people as needed.

  • You know who you are and make decisions with intention and purpose.

  • You do not attempt to carry the leadership load alone but empower others to co-lead with you.

  • You are a good steward of your time, have honor your strategy and authority, i.e. you have clear boundaries, and know the value of your work.

  • You do not say yes to everyone that shows up at your door. You follow your strategy and authority when making OWL of your decisions.

  • You allow your values, strategy, authority, and purpose to guide your decisions rather than fear, anxiety, the reactive mind.

  • You are energized by your work and life, rather than living in a chronic state of burnout and fatigue.
